The ITIL Certification Credit Program

The new ITIL certification program has recently been announced (in part) by the official ITIL certification agent (APMG). Although a lot of information about this scheme has already been released to the general public, at the time of writing there are still warnings being issued that the program could change.

The new scheme comprises a number of different layers of certification, as presented below:

Foundation Layer (ITIL Foundation)
There will continue to be v3 Foundation level course and passing the exam will earn you 2 credits. For anyone that has a current ITIL Foundation (any previous version) certificate from Exin or ISEB, the value of that qualification is 1.5 credits.

If you have 1.5 credits you still need to earn the additional 0.5 points to progress. This is achieved by attending an ITIL Foundation bridging program and passing the exam, or simply taking the v3 approach from scratch.

Once you have passed the ITIL v3 Foundation exam, or the ITIL v2 Foundation exam and bridging exam, then you can move to the next layer of certification.

Secondary Layer (The Diploma)
Under the new certification scheme there are two streams at the intermediate layer. Service Capability and Service Lifecycle.

The Service Capability stream offers four courses. The exam for each of these has a value of 4 credits. The Capability programs take various elements from across the lifecycle. The program titles are:
• Service Portfolio & Relationship Management
• Service Design & Optimization
• Service Monitoring & Control
• Service Operation & Support

The Service Lifecycle stream offers five courses. The exam for each of these has a value of 3 credits. The Lifecycle programs are based around a specific book. The program titles are:
· Service Strategy
· Service Design
· Service Transition
· Service Operation
· Continual Service Improvement

You will need to earn 15 credits at this secondary layer in order to proceed to the next layer. You can do this by passing all exams in one stream or you can take a variety of different programs and exams from both streams.

If you have existing ITIL certifications in the Practitioner level then they are awarded credits based on the following:
• Single process practitioner courses - 1 credit each.
• Clustered practitioner courses – 3.75 credits each

There is a small caveat: if you are using some past qualifications as credits and you need to make up some more points with new courses, you are not permitted to study new courses that have the same topics as ones you have already passed ( e.g. if you hold the IPSR clustered practitioner qualification then you cannot get credit for the Service Operation exam).

Once you have accumulated the required 15 credits at the secondary layer you are now 5 credits short of the 22 credits required to earn the new IT Service Management Diploma.

The step to get here is called the 'Managing through the Lifecycle' program. Passing the exam for this course is worth the requisite 5 credits. This is a mandatory program if you wish to obtain the ITIL Diploma (you cannot earn an additional 5 credits in the Capability and Lifecycle streams).

NOTE: ITIL v2 Managers - If you are already ITIL v2 Managers certified then you only need to complete one course to achieve the Diploma in IT Service Management. A Managers bridging course is offered and it negates the requirement to take any exams at the foundation or secondary layer.

Advanced Layer (Advanced Diploma)
There will also be an 'Advanced Diploma in IT Service Management' certificate. This program will really be the pinnacle of IT Service Management/ITIL qualifications as it will be restricted to those individuals that are able to demonstrate the practical application of IT Service Management principles, as well as meeting other pre-requisites.

At the time of publication only the following syllabi, that relate to the new certification program, have been released by the APM Group ITIL v3 Foundation ITIL v2 to v3 Foundation Bridge

The new credit program provides a more cohesive and stable approach to ITIL certification, supporting a more career focused objective. It should enable a clear progress path regardless of whether you are new to the industry or a veteran looking to further enhance your professional status.
