ITIL Certification: Version 3 Q&A

With the new version of ITIL around the corner, we have recently fielded a growing number of questions with respect to the examination structure and related issues. We hope that the following brief Q&A will help dispel some of the misconceptions:

1. Will my Foundation certificate still be valid? Will it expire?
At this point in time any ITIL certification you have based upon v2 exams will be valid even after the appearance of v3... BUT that may eventually change. Equally, natural forces may also drive the market towards v3 certification.

2. Can I still take exams at Prometric?
There are no public plans to remove the Foundation exam from Prometric.

3. Can I still take exams through Exin/ISEB?
Yes.

4. Are the Practitioner and Manager exams changing?
Most certainly. These will be the areas of most significant change with respect to certification.

5. Will the new exams include anything on ISO 20000?
ISO 20000 is fast becoming a dominant force, so much so that entirely new certifications are emerging to support it. ITIL (perhaps manager and practitioner) may well adjust to reflect this.

6. Will the Foundation exam format be the same?
Yes.

7. Are any other similar ITSM exams emerging, perhaps with a wider scope than ITIL?
Yes. The first major development is via Exin's SQMF certification.
