The Two Minute Interview: The ITIL Open Guide

In each issue of the ITIL Newsletter we will attempt to interview a different leading industry figure. In this edition we discuss the ITIL Open Guide with it's administrator, Christine Plant.

Q. In your own words, what is the 'Open Guide'?
A. It is part of the 'open movement'. I guess the basic theory is that most of the real ITIL knowledge is out there, amongst the thousands of professionals. The basic idea is to enable them to document their knowledge and experience for the benefit of the wider ITIL public. It is the same principle as Wikipedia, but dedicated to ITIL and related issues.

Q: You house the voluntary ITIL Certification Register. How did that come about?
A: Basically we were receiving a lot of questions from all sorts of quarters, including both employers and certified professionals. The bottom line is that there was no formal register. Creating a voluntary arrangement simply seemed to be the obvious thing to do. It quickly snowballed to be a major resource and focus.

Q. Which direction do you see it taking in the future?
A. That is down to our contributors. We basically provide the framework: the canvass. It is the ITIL public that paint the picture. They have done a pretty good job so far!

Q. Do you have any problems.
A. Yes. The major challenge we face is from those who attempt to abuse the facility: largely link spammers and commercial interests who wish to insert adverts. We monitor constantly to delete this, but it is an overhead. In the longer term, as the initiative becomes even more popular, we may need to raise funds for a dedicated hosting package, but that is for another day. Certainly though, the positives and benefits the guide offers easily outweigh these issues.
